let’s cut to the chase

The True Cost of Doing Your Own Bookkeeping

This math comes from our most-shared post — now it’s yours. Slide it around. Your numbers, your math: an illustration, not a quote.

10 hrs
$100/hr
3 months behind

Doing your own books costs you

$12,000 / year

That’s $6,000 a year more than the fix — and every evening back.

ROD bookkeeping starts at $500/mo ($6,000/yr) — with tax strategy included. Difference at your numbers: $6,000 a year.

Book My Call

Bring your number. We’ll take it from there.

The five hidden costs — watch them light up as your numbers move:

01dormant

Your evenings, gone

Hours at the kitchen table after the workday ends — reconciling instead of resting, planning, or selling.

02dormant

Mistakes you can’t see

DIY books hide errors quietly. They surface at tax time, when unwinding them costs the most.

03dormant

Deductions never claimed

If nobody is watching for them all year, April is too late. You can’t claim what you never tracked.

04dormant

The cleanup bill

Fall behind and the first project is archaeology: months of transactions sorted at cleanup prices — plus penalties for anything filed late meanwhile.

05dormant

Decisions on stale numbers

Pricing, hiring, and spending calls made from last quarter’s books. Current books are a decision tool. Old ones are a guess.

Lit by your inputs, not our opinion. Hours are only cost #1 — the other four don’t care what your time is worth.

behind on your books?

Behind on Your Books? You’re Not the First Owner We’ve Caught Up.

You’re probably picturing the cleanup: brutal, expensive, and a little embarrassing. Here’s the truth — catch-up bookkeeping is a service we sell every week, not a secret you have to confess. No lecture. No judgment line-items.

What you get first is a cleanup plan and a straight number for it. Then the monthly rhythm starts — and behind stops happening.

Book My Call

Tell us how far behind you are. That’s the whole confession.

What “caught up” looks like

  • Every transaction categorized
  • Banks reconciled to the penny
  • Statements you can actually read
  • A tax picture with no surprises in it

…and a founder who can finally answer “how’s business?” with numbers.

what we do

Everything a Growing Business Outsources — Under One Roof

“My books run my nights.”

Tax Strategy & Bookkeeping

From $500/mo

Clean, current books every month — categorized, reconciled, and reviewed like a tax plan, because tax strategy is included, not sold back to you later. You get statements you can actually use; we watch for the savings all year.

Start here — most owners do

“Tax time is a scramble.”

Tax Preparation

Priced by complexity

Business and personal returns prepared from books that are already clean — so you get every deduction you deserve. No surprises, just peace of mind.

“Payroll day makes me sweat.”

Payroll & Sales Tax

Priced by team size

Payroll calculated, withheld, and filed correctly — your team paid on time, every time. Sales tax reviewed alongside, before it becomes a notice with your name on it.

When the questions get bigger:

CFO Services

Forecasting, budgeting, and cash-flow strategy for owners making bigger calls. Priced on inquiry.

Startup & Small Business Advisory

Entity setup and structure done right from day one, so the books start clean. Packages tailored to your launch.

meet your strategist

Hey! I’m Lorena.

I come from a family of entrepreneurs, so I know what a business costs the people who run it. I started ROD as a one-woman operation — and grew it into a team by doing one thing differently: treating your books like a tax plan, not a filing cabinet.

Making money is fun. Keeping it is even better — and keeping it is mostly a matter of what happens in the eleven months before April.

  • Enrolled AgentFederally licensed tax professional — the IRS’s own credential.
  • CPA CandidateOn the CPA track, with a decade in the field already.
  • M.S. in Taxation — Baruch CollegeA master’s degree in the subject your April depends on.
  • 10+ years in the tax fieldA decade of returns, books, and strategy behind every engagement.
  • Director of Tax — NewWay AccountingLorena also leads the tax department at a second accounting firm.
  • Guest speakerTaught tax savings to Long Island owners at Designed by Sisterhood’s “Network & Learn,” Hauppauge — September 2025.

Today ROD is a team of accountants — 5–9 on staff, per our Gusto partner profile — still founder-led, still the opposite of stuffy. We’re not your average number crunchers, and we don’t want to be.

Book My Call

ROD is for you if…

  • You run a business with 1–50 employees
  • You do your own books — or get statements you can’t use
  • You want tax strategy before April, not apologies after

Honestly not for you if…

  • You want the cheapest data entry you can find
  • You only want a once-a-year filing, and nothing more
  • Your books are already current, strategic, and boring

before you ask

Straight Answers, Up Front

I’m months behind on my books. Can you still take me on?

Yes — catch-up bookkeeping is one of the main reasons owners come to us. We start by catching you up: transactions sorted, banks reconciled, statements you can actually read. Then the monthly rhythm starts, and “behind” stops happening. Book a call and tell us how far behind you are — that’s the whole confession.

What does the $500 a month actually include?

Bookkeeping with tax strategy included: monthly transaction categorization, bank reconciliations, financial statements, payroll coordination, sales tax review, fixed asset tracking, and year-end tax prep — from $500 a month. It’s the firm’s published starting price for Tax Strategy & Bookkeeping, and it’s where most small businesses start.

Is Lorena a CPA?

Lorena is an Enrolled Agent — a federally licensed tax professional, the credential the IRS itself issues — and a CPA Candidate, with a Master’s in Taxation from Baruch College and over a decade in the tax field. We print the credentials exactly as they are. They’re strong enough not to need rounding up.

Do you only work with Long Island businesses?

Our office is in Bohemia, NY, and we love our Long Island clients — but ROD offers remote services and works with businesses wherever they are, through a secure client portal. Office visits are by appointment.

What size business is ROD built for?

Businesses with 1 to 50 employees — the sizes in our Gusto partner profile — across construction and trades, food and beverage, healthcare, professional services, real estate, and retail. If you’re a solo owner doing your own books at night, you’re exactly who the calculator at the top of this page was built for.

Can’t I just keep doing my own books?

You can — plenty of owners do, and some genuinely enjoy it. Run your own numbers through the calculator first. If your time is worth less than the fee and the five hidden costs don’t bite, keep your evenings. If they do bite, you know where to find us.

How do we start?

Book a call through the short form on our contact page — tell us about your project, and Lorena reviews every inquiry herself. We’ll talk about where your books stand, what you actually need, and what it costs. No pressure and no obligation — just a plan you can judge.

Still weighing it? Book My Call — one short form. Lorena reviews every inquiry herself and replies personally.
